Psychological Safety

Psychological Safety

Psychological safety is the ability to speak openly in the workplace about personal and professional matters without fear of retaliation, judgment, or inequities. It is a critical foundation for fostering inclusive, authentic, innovative, high-performing, and engaged workplaces.
Since equity-seeking professionals are disproportionately impacted by a lack of psychological safety, creating psychologically safe environments is vital to advancing inclusion and equity in the workplace.

The Connection Between Psychological Safety, Belonging and Authenticity

Authenticity is a fundamental component in developing organizational cultures predicated on psychological safety and a sense of belonging. Leaders who demonstrate authentic behaviors and who understand disadvantage around those who may not be able to possess authenticity are more likely to foster teams characterized by safety, trust, inclusivity, and empowerment, where all team members feel at ease expressing their identity and emotions in the workplace.
